Quiet heroes answer the call to save struggling sea lions on our beaches and nurse survivors back to health. The teams from our Marine Mammal Centers perform rescues all along our state’s coast, and this year their resources are stretched thin.
California is seeing an unusually high number of deaths & illness among our sea lion populations. This results from domoic acid toxicosis, produced by exceptional algae bloom events. The sea lions (and potentially seals) get sick when ingesting large volumes of small fish like sardines & anchovies which accumulate this neurotoxin.
Saving these sea lions involves flushing the toxins from their systems with fluids and feeding them toxin-free seafood.
How can we help? Stay at least 50 feet away and do not disturb the animal. Call (415) 289-Seal and advise the Marine Mammal Center where the sick animal is. To support these dedicated care givers, you can donate as little as $5/month and make a real difference!
